Make the Leap! The Power of Embracing Change
As someone who specialises in speaking about reframing fear and embracing change, I realised I was failing to follow my own advice – delaying a decision to fully focus on keynote speaking and stand-up way beyond when I knew I needed to do it.
Feeling the fear?
I don’t think it was done out of fear (although, let’s be honest, we all worry about failure, rejection and making the ‘wrong’ decision) it was more from feeling comfortable in having a blend of speaking work and tech work. And we all know what can happen if you get too comfortable – you lose your edge a bit, become flabby, more easily distracted and less motivated.
So, after dancing around my handbag a bit, having some honest conversations with myself (you’ve got to convince yourself first!) and my long-time colleague and friend Helen Rutherford, I’m now 100% focused on delivering content that speaks to social mobility, embracing change and breaking cycles. To mark this, the website has – you may have noticed.. – had a wicked refresh thanks to the team at KAYBE. and there’s LOTS of video content being produced and shared via my YouTube channel (with thanks to Maxwell Fletcher for his videography, editing and tutorial skills).
Might as well jump
In reflecting on this change, I was prompted to dig out some photos to remind me of the power of making a leap:
- bungee jumping over a pool on a girls holiday when I was around 18 years old (probably highly inadvisable when you realise that it really wasn’t very deep and we really weren’t paying any attention when we signed that waiver…)
- taking part in a skydive in my late 20s where I was properly secured to an extremely experienced skydiver!
What strikes me is that in both I’m not on my own – a good way to signify that often, when we’re set on making a big change, there will be people supporting and cheering us on 🙂
Thinking about making the leap?
If you’ve got something you want to do, but are afraid about making the jump for fear of failure, please don’t be discouraged or give up! I’ll be posting more over the coming weeks on how to face your fears and do it anyway and to flip those common blockers that we put in our way into a tool that motivates us to embrace change.
