In an Intelligence Forums session on Social Mobility, each subject matter expert was given just six minutes to share their insights. Thankfully I love a good challenge and decided to structure my talk on six steps that took me on a path that the Institute of Fiscal Studies calculates would ordinarily take five generations to achieve….
Six minutes to talk = six steps to social mobility
Having wracked my brains for a good deal more than six minutes, here’s what I came up with as my own personal six steps to social mobility:
🚫 Realising I didn’t want to repeat a cycle
👩🏫 Getting a second chance at education
🛃 Meeting the role models I needed to see
🚗 Having something tangible to aim for
👨👩👧👦 Seeing a different version of family life
🤝 Managers who hired for ‘add’ and not ‘fit’
The stuff I didn’t have time for (but is also important)
There’s some other bits and pieces in their too (soft skills training, financial literacy insights, fabulous mentors and colleagues who were an absolute laugh to work with, friends who didn’t reject me because I didn’t have the same financial capital or cultural cues), but that would take more than six minutes.
